From classic staples to current trends, I'm rounding up my favorite picks for the season.
Fall is my favorite time of the year- cooler weather, lots of layers & of course, fall fashion. If it's one thing that working in fast fashion for almost 20 years taught me, it's that trends will come & go. So I really try to avoid micro trends that will be here today & gone tomorrow & focus on making smarter purchases.
If you're looking to add something new to your wardrobe this season, I've carefully selected 7 items that feel both timeless & trendy & that can easily be worked into your existing closet. Picking one or two of these items can help update those favorites from years past to feel more current. & Since some fashion trends cycles around about every 20 year, it was important to pick trends that will still be relevant for years to come.
brown suede

Last Fall we saw brown suede everywhere- from jackets, to bags & boots. I still see this as a timeless trend worth investing it. Suede is a great way to add texture to any outfit & all the different style of suede jackets just look so chic.

ways to wear-
A suede jacket can be a great staple to elevate even the most basic outfit from boring to chic. It's also a great texture piece to play with.
denim on denim

Ahh the classic Canadian Tuxedo. This combo is a classic for a reason. It requires minimal effort, yet looks effortless & cool. For a more more current take on the trend, look for an oversized denim shirt & pair with your favorite denim jeans. Honestly, any style or fit will work. Wear the ones you love.

ways to wear-
It's totally ok to mix different shades of denim together- light, medium, dark. I just suggest sticking with denim that has similar undertones, like in the outfit above. For example, if my denim shirt has more indigo hues, I would avoid pairing it with jeans that have a green or brown undertone to them.
sheer skirts

While I have to admit the sheer skirt errs on the side of a fast fashion trend, I can't help but love all the different ways you can layer it for fall & how it can elevate those classic staples that you already own.

ways to wear-
The sheer skirt is great for adding texture to a monochromatic look, like above. You can also try playing with proportions & wear something move oversized if your skirt is fitted or drapes straight down. Pair it everything from a blazer or sweater to your favorite band tee or an oversized sweatshirt.
loafers

A timeless staple that you can't go wrong with. If you're looking for a style that's a bit more current & trendy for right now, look for a chunky style sole. For a more timeless style, look for a loafer with a more slim bottom.

ways to wear-
With socks or without. Loafers aren't just for professional & dressier outfits. They even work with more casual staples like jeans & a cardigan or your favorite sweatshirt.
denim trends

I don't see barrel jeans going away anytime soon. But if that's not really your vibe, a classic slim straight denim is a great style to invest in. Think of the effortless outfits from the 90s.

ways to wear-
Find the best fit for your body type. Typically as a midsized gal, I love a good high-waisted denim that helps hold everything in & defines my waist line. Make sure you have enough room in the rise because nothing is worse than denim that rides up in all the most unflattering places.
cropped jackets

Blazers & trenches are great timeless staples every closet should have. But if you're looking for something a little more trendy this fall, you might want to try a cropped style. Just be sure to hold onto it this time because this is a fit that seems to cycles over again in fashion.

ways to wear-
With a cropped jacket you want to keep the rule of thirds top of mind. See how the above outfit just works? That's because her jacket & top take up 1/3 of her body. The other 2/3 of her look is her long maxi skirt. When wearing cropped jackets you want to keep your waistline defined. So that means tucking in your top or pairing with a shorter shirt.
fur

I've always been a fan of fur- faux fur, thrifted fur, vintage fur. Once a statement piece usually only worn around the holidays or for special events, fur is finding it's way into everyday looks for fall. Literally a closest staple that will never go out of style if you stick to more neutral tones. I would avoid pop colors as they can quickly feel dated when a trend cycles out.

ways to wear-
Don't be afraid to wear your fur with a more casual outfit. Pull in accessories & shoes that feel more casual or sporty to help balance out the dressiness of the jacket. Playing with opposites here will help your fur jacket outfit feel more current & trendy.
Lastly, remember trendy pieces are great for keeping a well-love wardrobe feeling fresh & current, however they won't work if you don't have a strong foundation. When your base feels strong & true to you, it becomes so much easier to layer in trends in a way that actually works.
It's important that you know your personal style words & let them guide every new piece you add to your closet.
